Riverfest Limerick 2025 is not just bringing the fun and festivities; it's also setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly events in Limerick.

Limerick City and County Council has secured the services of a sustainability auditor who will report on various aspects of the festival, including waste management, energy use, and the overall carbon footprint. As excitement builds for the 21st Riverfest on the May Bank Holiday Weekend (02 to 05 May), Limerick City and County Council is proud to highlight the green initiatives that are making this year the most sustainable festival yet.

Sustainability Highlights:

  • Zero-Waste Practices: Riverfest Limerick is establishing waste segregation stations across the festival locations. These stations will facilitate the sorting of general waste, recyclables, and compostables, ensuring that materials are disposed of responsibly. Trained staff will be available to assist attendees in proper waste disposal, aiming to divert waste from landfills.
  • Eco-Friendly Travel: Recognising the environmental impact of transportation, we encourage attendees to utilise public transport options to reach the festival. Opting for buses, trains, walking or carpooling helps reduce carbon emissions associated with individual car use.
  • Digital Event Materials: To minimise paper usage, all event maps, schedules, and information are available digitally. Attendees can download the Riverfest Limerick 2025 Events Map to navigate the festivities.
  • Green Vendors: Food vendors are encouraged to offer locally sourced, organic, and plant-based food options, reducing the carbon footprint associated with food production and transportation.

These efforts align perfectly with Limerick's Climate Action Week, which runs from April 28th to May 5th, reinforcing Limerick’s commitment to environmental stewardship. See more here

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, is welcoming festival's green initiatives, saying:

"Riverfest Limerick 2025 is a celebration of our community and our environment. By prioritising sustainability, we're enhancing the festival experience and also protecting our beautiful city and its natural surroundings. I encourage everyone to participate in these green efforts and make this Riverfest the most eco-friendly yet."

Príomh Comhairleoir Cllr Dan McSweeney added:

"It's wonderful to see Riverfest Limerick leading the way in sustainability. As we celebrate one of our greatest natural resources, the mighty River Shannon, it is fitting that these green initiatives are implemented. They reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. Let's enjoy the festivities while making a positive impact on our planet."

Head of Tourism, Festivals and Events at Limerick City and County Council, Eileen Coleman commented:

"Our team has worked tirelessly to ensure that Riverfest Limerick 2025 is not only entertaining but also environmentally responsible. We're excited to see the community embrace these green initiatives and set a new standard for festivals in Limerick."
