The Mayor of Limerick has issued Limerick City & County Council’s ‘asks’ to Government as part of the current ongoing review of the National Development Plan (NDP).
As requested by the Government, to identify key capital asks for Limerick and specifically transformational outcomes, Mayor John Moran has issued letters to individual Government Ministers. These outline a summary of key project proposals in Limerick in a number of key areas, including housing, transport and infrastructure.
Mayor Moran held briefings with elected representatives earlier this week.
It is a unique opportunity for Limerick among local authorities derived from being the only local authority to have a Directly Elected Mayor. It specifically follows on from the first meeting of the Limerick Mayoral and Government Consultative Forum, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin, in March.
Following a briefing with members of the media, the Mayor commented:
“Limerick stands ready, not just to dream big, but to deliver. Our asks in the National Development Plan are not wish lists. They are catalysts for growth, both locally here in Limerick, regionally across the Midwest and nationally. What we seek now is the Government’s help to unlock them fully. We have identified housing delivery as the key outcome and three high potential neighbourhoods to transform – Colbert Quarter, the Northside (Moyross) and out historic city centre (Georgian Limerick). With the right investment, all our identified projects including commuter rail, water infrastructure, the Foynes to Limerick Road and better public realms can drive a new model of regional development.”
He added: “Limerick has never shied away from doing things differently. With the right support, we will act swiftly and decisively to deliver projects. We want to play our part to set a standard for what co-ordinated ambition and delivery can look like. Limerick is ready to build, and we are ready to deliver More for Limerick.”
