Weather Advisory: Severe Wintery Conditions in Limerick This Week

  • Ballingarry Village
  • Gritter Plough Reloading

Limerick City and County Council advises members of the public that recent heavy snowfall will be followed by freezing temperatures and widespread frost in the coming days.

Temperatures are forecast to fall as low as -8°C, creating treacherous underfoot and driving conditions with ice and black ice likely. The thaw is currently forecast for Friday.

The Council will continue to treat roads in accordance with the Winter Road Maintenance Plan. All National Routes in Limerick are currently open, and treatment of Regional Routes is ongoing. Similarly, all roads in the city centre are open and many footpaths in the city have been treated. Treatment of roads and footpaths is not a guarantee that they are safe and caution is advised.

Keeping these strategic and priority routes open assists with medical emergencies and the restoration and maintenance of vital services like electricity and water supplies.

Please note that Council crews are already overstretched keeping priority routes open and may not be able to facilitate clearance of additional roads/footpaths.

We advise people to prepare for severe weather conditions until the end of the week. Stay safe and take necessary precautions.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is praising the response to the extreme weather, saying

"I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Limerick City and County Council crews, Limerick Fire Service, Limerick Civil Defence, our homeless services and all our blue light services. Their dedication and swift response to assist people during this severe weather event have been exemplary. We are truly fortunate to have such committed individuals working tirelessly to keep roads open and our community safe. I am asking everyone to help by not taking risks that could put you or others in danger."

Senior Engineer, Roads at Limerick City and County Council, John Gannon advises

“I want to first of all thank all of our crews for their hard work and dedication during an exceptionally busy few days, working all hours to keep main routes safe. We are preparing for further travel disruption this week. The forecast is for freezing temperatures creating greater hazardous and treacherous conditions for travelling on already wet or snow covered routes.

“There are 4000 kilometres of roadway in Limerick and it is not possible to treat every road and pedestrian area. We have to prioritise critical and strategic roads, which equate to 500km of the road network. Staff and resources have been stretched to their limit particularly over the past weekend keeping these critical roads open for transport. I would urge people to avoid any unnecessary journeys while these severe low temperatures persist.”
