Limerick City and County Council welcomes the announcement from the Office of Public Works (OPW) regarding the Government's commitment to proceed with the development of the landmark 14-storey building on the Opera Square site.
This is set to be a transformative addition to the city centre, contributing significantly to urban regeneration.
The Opera Square project is being led by Limerick Twenty Thirty (LTT), a dynamic property development company established as a special purpose vehicle by Limerick City and County Council to plan and develop key strategic sites in Limerick City and County. The elected Council members backed this initiative, demonstrating their commitment to fostering economic development and transforming Limerick into a vibrant, modern city.
The four-acre Opera Square site will include commercial buildings, apartment living space, a new central library, a hotel, retail space, and a public plaza. Once complete, the building will accommodate approximately 900 workspaces and up to 1,500 public servants in a hybrid working environment.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran welcomed the announcement, saying:
“The announcement of the Government’s renewed commitment to advancing the Opera Square project is a really important moment for Limerick. We’ve spoken of possibilities in Limerick for a long time. Now, with this decisive backing, we are acting on them. The Opera Square represents the heart of a modern, confident Limerick - a city that leads, not follows. I was pleased to accompany the Minister for Housing to the Opera site recently and was struck by the clear progress that has already been made. With Opera Square, we are sending a clear signal: Limerick is ready to be a capital of progress and doing things differently in the Midwest region. We have the talent. We have the drive. Now, we have Government backing. Let’s continue to push for More for Limerick.”
Príomh Comhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, adding:
“This announcement marks a pivotal moment for Limerick. The Opera Square development is a visual testament to our commitment to revitalising Limerick and creating an exciting, sustainable urban environment. I look forward to watching this landmark building rising up alongside the nearly complete One Opera Square. It will reshape and reinvigorate this important and historical area of the city.”
Deputy Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Joe Delaney, commented:
“The flagship 14-storey building at Opera Square will be another step in realising our vision for Limerick, demonstrating what is possible. We have already been witness to the development of One Opera Square and the potential of these developments is exciting.”
The flagship building is expected to be completed and ready for occupation in 2029.
