Limerick City and County Council has today welcomed the allocation of over €83 million in funding for vital roads projects across the county.
This significant investment includes almost €70 million for the Adare bypass, which will feature 7 km of new motorway from Croagh to Adare and two new railway bridges. The works are expected to be completed ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup in Adare.
The funding allocation is part of €633 million funding for national roads announced today by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien.
In addition to the Adare bypass, €4.5 million has been allocated towards the Limerick to Cork motorway, and €7.6 million has been earmarked for a variety of National Primary and Secondary roads in Limerick.
These projects include pavement renewals, verge works, and safety improvements at key locations such as Barnagh, Abbeyfeale, Adare, Murphy's Cross, O’Rourke’s Cross, Pallasgreen, Grange Cross, and Ward’s Cross. This funding will support maintenance and repair work, ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of our road network.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran said:
"I welcome the allocation announced by the department for Limerick today. The funding will copper fasten the progression of the Adare Bypass being in place by Autumn 2027, which is a staple of the Mayoral Programme. Continued suport for the project will be essential in order to meet the tight deadlines required for the Ryder Cup. It’s particularly important on a day when the Taoiseach visited Limerick to have an opportunity to discuss the need for focus to progress the road to Foynes, in order to prepare the region for off-shore wind facilities and their benefits.”
Priomh Comhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney said:
"This substantial funding allocation is a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing our infrastructure and supporting the growth and development of Limerick. The Adare bypass, along with other vital road projects, will not only improve connectivity and safety but also ensure that our region is well-prepared for the prestigious Ryder Cup in 2027. We are excited about the positive impact these projects will have on our community and look forward to seeing the benefits for years to come."
Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly emphasised the strategic significance of the funding:
"It’s great to have confirmation of this funding that will allow us to drive on with this critical piece of infrastructure. The target for completion is ahead of the Ryder Cup in 2027 but the improvements to our roads infrastructure will have lasting benefits for Limerick and the region."
Director of Service, Travel and Transport Strategy at Limerick City and County Council, Hugh McGrath commented:
“This is hugely important. This funding announcement underscores the commitment the Government has always given to getting this project complete for 2027 and to have the road network available to facilitate such an important event, the Ryder Cup. We also welcome the €4.5m grant for NM20 to allow for continued progression of the planning stages of this Strategically important Inter City infrastructure as well as the funds to progress the Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale bypass projects.”
Limerick City and County Council looks forward to the positive impact these projects will have on the region and remains committed to enhancing the quality of life for all residents through improved infrastructure.
