Limerick City and County Council is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Mayor of Limerick, and former Limerick City Councillor, Kathleen Leddin, who served Limerick with distinction and dedication.
Kathleen Leddin served as an independent councillor on the old Limerick City Council between 1999 and 2014 and was the 817th Mayor of Limerick serving from 2013 to 2014. She was a strong advocate for environmental conservation and passionate about heritage and community.
Kathleen's late husband, Tim Leddin, also served as Mayor of Limerick and was a Fine Gael councillor in Limerick City. Her son Brian Leddin was the first Green Party Limerick City and County Councillor and is a former Limerick TD.
Kathleen’s nephew, Joe Leddin is a sitting Labour councillor on Limerick City and County Council making the Leddin family a cornerstone of public service in Limerick.
Mayor of Limerick, Cllr John Moran, expressed his heartfelt condolences:
“Kathleen was a trailblazer; she was always pushing myself and many others as a mentor in terms of public service. We’ve lost a super person in Limerick today, who has done so much for the city and the wider region. She always had a great wit and a great sense of humour, which was always guided by compassion for others around her, both in the political sphere and outside of it. Her legacy will be public service steeply rooted in family and education, from her long number of years as Councillor to serving as Mayor, which I know meant so much to her and her family. I offer my sincere condolences and sympathies to her loved ones and many friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis."
Príomh Comhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney, also paid tribute:
"Kathleen's commitment to Limerick was unwavering. She was a passionate advocate for environmental conservation and heritage, particularly evident in her efforts to preserve the Westfields Wetlands. Her legacy will continue to inspire us all."
Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly, added:
"Kathleen's tenure as councillor and Mayor was marked by her dedication to the social and economic development of Limerick. She was a dedicated and passionate public servant and always courteous in her dealings with staff. May she rest in peace."
Limerick City and County Council extends its deepest sympathies to Kathleen's family and friends during this difficult time. Her contributions to our community will never be forgotten.
