Discover Limerick’s Wild Side with National Biodiversity Week 2025

Limerick City and County Council is offering a number of FREE events and activities for National Biodiversity Week 2025, taking place from 16th to 25th May, incorporating a celebration of International Biodiversity Day on 22nd May.

This week-long event aims to connect people with nature across Ireland through a series of walks and talks, offering opportunities to experience and learn about Ireland's rich biodiversity. 

Organised by the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) and funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Biodiversity Week will feature a variety of engaging activities. 

Limerick City and County Council will host several exciting events, including: 

In-Person Events: 

  • Bats of Bruree: Friday 16th May, 9pm-12am.  
  • Awesome Pollinators on the Sallybank/Corbally Wildflower Meadow: Saturday 17th May, 11am-1pm.  
  • Irish Wildlife Trust Limerick Branch led Biodiversity Event in Curraghchase: Saturday 17th May, 11.30am-1pm.  
  • Discover Nature on the Castletroy Greenway: Sunday 25th May, 11am - 1pm

Online Events: 

  • Nesting Up Close - The Organic Centre: Friday 16th May, All Day.  
  • Green Bathing: Friday 16th May, All Day. Drop into a guided immersive walk under a tree canopy.  
  • Insights from the Irish Stoat Survey - Vincent Wildlife Trust: Thursday 22nd May, 7pm-8pm. De. 

Biodiversity Photography Competition: 

  • Ireland's Environmental Network Biodiversity-related Photography Competition: Photos must be taken in May 2025.

Sinead Mc Donnell, Limerick City and County Council’s Biodiversity Officer, encourages everyone to participate in these events or simply spend time outdoors. She emphasises: 

 “Biodiversity Week is a time to highlight the incredible nature around us. As humans, we are part of biodiversity, not separate from it. Use your senses to explore, listen, and immerse yourself in the nature on your doorstep.” 

Limerick’s Biodiversity Week events are supported by the Heritage Council’s Local Authority Biodiversity Action Plan programme and the NPWS’s Local Biodiversity Action Fund.
